culturecapital by Milton Lim and Patrick Blenkarn
Presented by Chinook Series
February 9 - 13, 2020
Edmonton, Alberta
culturecapital is a card game tournament by Milton Lim and Patrick Blenkarn about Alberta’s performing arts industry and it’s set to take over the 2020 Chinook Series from February 9-13, 2020 at the ATB Financial Arts Barns.
In this show, a $21 deck is your ticket to every match. So buy your own deck today, learn to play, and compete with other audience members at the round robin tournament to reach the finals—where you can take home the cash prize of $500. Everything you need to know in order to play can be found online at www.culturecapital.cards. It’s easy to learn, fun to play, and no prior arts experience or card game experience is necessary.
Wait—you’re saying two artists have really spent years building a card game about the performing arts industries in different parts of Canada? Yes.
Designed from a mix of interviews with local artists about their experiences making performance and four years worth of public funding data on performing arts companies in Alberta, Milton Lim and Patrick Blenkarn invite Chinook Series audiences to summon Companies, roll for Grants, play Projects, and use Strategies to win over Communities. The player with the most Communities, wins.
Edmonton’s 2020 Chinook Series performance marks the inaugural public tournament for culturecapital. Concurrent versions of the game are being developed for tournaments at festivals in Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto, and Calgary.
The ongoing collaborations of artists, Milton Lim (Room 2048, Hong Kong Exile; Foreign Radical, Theatre Conspiracy) and Patrick Blenkarn (1991, Guilty by Association/RISER Project; Soliloquy in English, SummerWorks), constitute a framework for investigating labour and value, using game mechanics in performance, and creating alternative contexts of discourse. Their projects are bringing games and media into the theatre in new and exciting ways. In addition to culturecapital, they are also the creators of the video game performance, asses.masses, and the founding archivists of videocan.
